Lymphatic Drainage During Pregnancy

Safe and recommended: Manual lymphatic drainage can be used during pregnancy, usually from the 2nd–3rd trimester. It helps relieve water retention in the legs, feet, and hands and improves overall well-being.
Important: Therapists carefully check for contraindications (e.g., suspected preeclampsia, acute infections) and adapt both technique and positioning accordingly.

Combination Treatments for Edema — common, proven additions include:

  • Compression therapy (e.g., compression stockings): stabilizes results after treatment.

  • Movement therapy / targeted activity: walking and leg exercises support venous return and lymphatic drainage.

  • Manual therapy / physiotherapy: improves mobility and supports venous and lymphatic function.

  • Kinesio taping: can be used alongside lymphatic drainage for localized swelling.

  • Nutritional and hydration guidance: reducing salt intake and ensuring adequate fluid consumption can positively influence edema.
